Mainfreight Developement Programme Application Process and Tips

We want to make sure you get the Mainfreight feeling from day one so we keep the application process as simple and personal as possible. We’re not into long-winded rounds of interviews or assessment centres. It’s about us both finding out whether we have a future together. Keep on reading for our tips to set you up for success!

Frequently Asked Questions about our programme

What is the working culture like?

At Mainfreight we are a very flat structured organisation. We have open plan offices and management sit in amongst the team. We do not use the “s” word (staff) and refer to everyone as Team – everyone has a part to play in moving Mainfreight forward and meeting our targets and goals.

We believe in working hard but we also have fun and a laugh while we do it. Our team is empowered to make decisions and have a say in how we do things.

Do I have a say in where I will be placed?

We have graduates based in our operations all around the country. Where you are located will depend on the opportunities available at the time you apply. During your Mainfreight career there are definitely opportunities to work across Asia!

If you request a specific location, we’ll do our best to find you a position there – either from the start or when the next opening comes up.

How many graduates do you take on each year and when does the application process open?

We do things a bit differently here. Rather than have fixed intakes like most businesses, we recruit as and when we need new talent. To us, it’s about getting the right fit, not just the right numbers.

Can I follow an international career path?

Yes! We support our team to follow a Asian career path should they want to. We like you to start in the country where you speak the native language, where you go next is up to you and the availability in the different countries. All you need to do is put your hand up!

As an international business we've got seats to fill - and with our philosophy of promoting from within, today's team members will play a major role in our future success. Our philosophy is to recruit and grow our own people from scratch. That means a pretty intense learning curve with plenty of chances to show us what you've got. If after a few years you've proved you have the Mainfreight passion, knowledge and skills, you may be considered for opportunities to work in our businesses around the world.

How long is the programme?

The programme takes one year but your development doesn't stop there! After the programme we will continue to invest in you and there will still be plenty of opportunities to develop yourself, thanks to our 'promote from within' philosophy.

INTERVIEW TIPS

  • Be prepared to talk about yourself: Sounds obvious, but the more we know about you the better. Tell us about what fires you up, what you want out of life and what you’ve achieved so far.
  • Do your homework: Find out about Mainfreight, talk to people, Google us. A long-term career here is much more likely if you feel like you’d fit into our culture and way of doing things. It’s not for everyone!
  • Ask questions: Find out whether Mainfreight can offer you what you’re looking for. Ask about the future direction of the business, induction, development or travel opportunities.
  • Think about how you handle challenges: Be prepared to tell us about any tough situations you’ve come up against and how you’ve handled them in a way that’s relevant to a role here at Mainfreight.
  • Practice!: Get your friends or family to do a mock interview and critique your responses. You’re up against others for the role so give it yourself the best chance, be well-prepared, confident and well-groomed.
  • Dress for success!: We value and protect our own image and we look for that in the people we hire. Dress like you already have the job and arrive on time.
